If I Wrote That Song: Michael Penn's "No Myth"

(I wrote this last year and posted it in a Facebook group I'm in. I think it's my favorite because usually this comes very easy to me, and I actually had to work at this one to get all the beats right! The original song itself is good, but I fell in love with one line, "maybe she's just looking for someone to dance with."  That one line grabbed me, and I went from there.)

THE MYTH (Someone to Dance With)

I stand alone on a darkened stage
Not sure if I can turn the page
Is this how the scene ends
There is so much more fire left inside
There's so much more I haven't tried
I raise my arms and start again
And dance to the song in my mind

What if all the music has gone silent
What if I don't sing, well that's the myth
Maybe I'm just looking for someone to dance with

It's too soon to take the final bow
I have to let it out somehow
Before I am consumed
Music and dance becomes its own duet
Scream to the heavens what is next
No matter the song or the tune
Won't lose my last chance to direct

What if all the music has gone silent
What if I don't sing, well that's the myth
Maybe I'm just looking for someone to dance with

The burning in my eyes hides the fire
The dance of one's not the same as the dance of two
It's language speaks more than just desire
The match has the same flame as the lighter, from red to blue
And you never knew
Don't think this is all about you

What if all the music has gone silent
What if I don't sing, well that's the myth
Maybe I'm just looking for someone to dance with
